The Beauty of Bourbon Tasting or Why Go To Spirits Tasting Events.
We’ve talked about Distill America and why that tasting event is so important to us. It is where we introduced J. Henry & Sons Wisconsin Straight Bourbon and new products annually, to the world. Maybe the idea of an event like that is overwhelming to you. Perhaps you don’t feel you’d want to spend the money to attend a huge tasting event like Distill America. After all, you can visit a bar to try different options and not have to deal with the crowds. There’s nothing in the world wrong with that.
So what’s so great about a tasting event?
One big advantage is there are many distillers all in one place. They’re usually not pouring just one bottle, they’re pouring several (or perhaps all) of their available options. This is a great way to discover something new that you’ve never tried before, and maybe even never heard of before. Remember, before Distill America 2015, nobody had ever heard about J. Henry & Sons!
While you’re there, you’re drinking without risk of buyer’s remorse. How many times have you bought a bottle because you were sold on the packaging or shelf talkers, only to find that when you popped the cork or twisted off the screw top, you discovered that what’s inside isn’t what you expected? A tasting event gives you an opportunity to try before you buy.
Another advantage is the educational opportunities. At many of these tasting events, they have seminars where you can learn the ins-and-outs of distilled spirits: anything from history to methods of barrel finishing and everything in between. For example, at this most recent Distill America, they held educational seminars for the first time. Joe was even one of the featured seminar speakers on a panel discussing grains, grains in the mash bill and grains in the wood, it was an interesting perspective.
Then there’s the advantage is affordability. Sure, at some events the tickets may seem pricey, but when you think about it, there’s tremendous value for the money spent. You get to taste dozens or more of different spirits, you’re doing it at an organized event, you get to try new things before anyone else, and you’re going to find drinks you enjoy without having to purchase full pours or bottles.
Of course, nothing compares to the next advantage, and that’s having fun. You’re socializing with other like-minded people and exploring what’s new or just new to you. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and learn new things about your palate and your favorites.
If you’re kicking yourself for missing Distill America and don’t want to wait another year, never fear. We have another tasting event just around the corner when Madison Magazine presents Top Shelf Winter Taste on March 20th. It is at The Edgewater, which is the same location as Distill America.
We’ll talk more about Top Shelf Winter Taste soon. In the meantime, there’s one more advantage to attending one of these great tasting events. You’ll #RewardYourself by learning ways to #DrinkBetterNotMore.
